SOLDIER OF CHRIST – WELL DONE

Major Kristian T. Andersen was promoted to Glory on March 17 in Los Alamitos, Calif.

Born Feb. 4, 1904 in Aberdeen, South Dakota, Kristian became a teacher after graduating from high school. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy. The Salvation Army was the center of his spiritual training and service from the early days of his life and remained so during his military service.

At age 43, he entered the Central Territory School for Officer Training from the Minneapolis #1 Corps and was commissioned in 1948 with the King’s Messengers Session. He married Major Tina Foubister and they served in several appointments in the Central Territory. His greatest joy was engaging young people in Army programs and seeing their spiritual growth. He retired from active service in 1969.

After retirement, he continued to serve—two years as director of Camp Wonderland in Wisconsin and twice as interim corps officer in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Here he maintained a half-acre garden, selling the vegetables and donating the proceeds to the Self Denial effort. For 10 years, he worked at the Van Nuys and Anaheim, Calif. ARCs as a counselor and shop foreman. He also helped to remodel the Honolulu camp.

His wife, Tina, preceded him in death. He is survived by his daughter, Karen (Larry) Freeman; four grandchildren and six great grandchildren; sister, Carol Andersen; brother-in-law, Colonel Gordon Foubister; sister-in-law, Mrs. Major Edwin (Eleanor) Henderson; and niece, Lt. Colonel Nancy Dalberg.

The funeral service was held in Aberdeen, South Dakota with Major Robert Scott and Captain Ralph Labbee officiating. Interment followed at Riverside Cemetery. A memorial service was held at the Tustin Ranch Corps, Tustin, Calif.
