Harbor Light helps vets
The Los Angeles Salvation Army Harbor Light Center received a grant award to provide direct services to incarcerated veterans, reported Conrad Watson, administrator. The program, called Incarcerated Veterans Transition Program (IVTP), is designed to support incarcerated veterans at risk of homelessness while they are still confined, and provide employment and substance abuse classes to facilitate a smooth transition from jail to the Harbor Light Center program.
“We are currently conducting classes at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the Lynnwood Central Detention Regional Facility, and we are planning a media announcement to introduce Sheriff Lee Baca and Volunteers of America along with TSA Harbor Light to outline the partnership we have formed to reach this very important population,” said Watson.
International Literary Conference on the horizon
An International Literary and Publications Conference will be held in Alexandria, VA, on April 22-29, 2005. According to Lt. Colonel Marlene Chase, Editor in Chief, national publications, about 110 delegates from around the world will attend. Author Philip Yancey will be keynote speaker. Covert is tops
Andrew Covert was recently named Salvation Army Youth of the Year at regional youth councils held in Eatonville, Wash. Andrew, the son of Anacortes Corps Officers Captains Mike and Beth Paugh, is a sophomore at Anacortes High School. Cited were his Christian witness and his willingness to volunteer at the Anacortes Corps and in the community.
San Jose says thanks
The San Jose ARC recently honored two members of the community for their pro bono legal activities helping men going through the Army’s drug and alcohol treatment facility. After Capt. Howard Bennett, ARC administrator, Superior Court Judge Mary Jo Levinger, and retired Judge Lawrence Terry recognized the need to ensure ARC graduates could return to a productive life, Karen Johnson, Santa Clara County Probation Department, and Bernardo Saucedo, Santa Clara County Public Defender’s Office, stepped forward and worked without compensation on the clients’ behalf—cleaning up the records of dozens of the ARC residents, without interrupting their recovery process. Johnson and Saucedo were presented with certificates of appreciation at an Advisory Council luncheon.
Army assists at Colorado fire
At the request of Larimer County emergency management officials, The Salvation Army of Fort Collins dispatched an emergency canteen to provide meals and hydration service to firefighters attacking the Picnic Rock fire. More than 5,600 acres were burned and 140 residents evacuated.
In support of the community, Captains Don and Martha Sheppard assembled a pastoral care team to conduct outreach activities, utilizing resources produced by the International Bible Society To date, the Army has provided 659 meals and thousands of beverages to firefighters, evacuees, law enforcement, and emergency management officials.
