With no hope or place to turn

Prayer Power

by Mervyn Morelock, Lt. Colonel –

“Yes, dear friends, we are already God’s children, and we can’t even imagine what we will be like when Christ returns. But we do know that when he comes we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is” (1 John 3:2-3 NLT)

Ever feel too ashamed even to pray? When what we’ve done, what we’ve said, was inexcusable? How could a holy God forgive, or even listen? Then, when we finally muster up enough courage to pray, it feels like he isn’t listening!

Recently, a beneficiary at the Phoenix ARC shared a poem he had written while he was in prison called “Why?” It describes the experience of many of us. There is no place to turn. Shame makes us feel our prayers will not be heard, and we are ashamed of what we have done. There is no hope, no place to turn.

We need to be reminded that he does hear and answer our prayers. That’s because we are his children and we are given his grace! But we can’t earn it, we can’t buy it, we can’t even inherit it. It’s a free gift! When we pray, sometimes for the same thing over and over, God never tires of our prayers. Why is that? It’s because we are his sons and daughters!

WHY ME?

“Why Me?”
I asked the man upstairs,
“Why did you let me fall?”
I’d figured he had plans for me
There’s a reason for it all.

At the times I hurt the most
I thought he wasn’t there,
and thought he just abandoned me
and didn’t even care.

There were times that I was scared
And feeling all alone.
The help was at my fingertips
If I’d just pick up the phone.

I just couldn’t make the call,
My pride was in the way.
And I can’t believe that through it all
I’m still alive today.

So now I do believe
that he heard me when I cried,
The good Lord was right with me
And he never left my side”
