One-day food drive brings in much-needed supplies and cash donations.
The Salvation Army in Vancouver, Washington, led by Majors Michael and Susan Nute, hosted a community food drive—”Neighbors Helping Neighbors”—April 27 to collect items desperately needed for its food bank.
The one-day event was a big success. According to Susan Nute, it raised almost $30,000 and amassed close to 13,000 pounds of food and other supplies, such as personal hygiene products and household cleaning supplies that will be added to the grocery boxes given to local families every week. The Salvation Army will use the monetary donations to continue providing various services in Vancouver, with some of the funds designated for corps programming, such as the after-school program.
“We are seeing an increased need at our food bank in Vancouver,” Michael Nute said. “The guests we regularly serve are needing more items from us, and many new guests are coming to us.” During March, The Salvation Army distributed nearly 1,000 grocery boxes in Vancouver, about a 30 percent increase in neighbors needing assistance.
The items most needed in grocery boxes at this time include: non-perishable goods: pasta and rice; canned soups and vegetables; canned meat and tuna; baby food and boxed meals such as Hamburger Helper; personal hygiene items, like razors and shaving cream, feminine products, diapers (infant, toddler and adult), toilet paper and Kleenex; household cleaning goods, like disinfecting wipes, cleaning and disinfectant solution and laundry detergent.
