Beginning with a stay at the famous Star Lake Camp, the Southern California Divisional Youth Band recently launch-ed a lively invasion of New York.

The United Nations was the first stop for a band which was itself comprised of many nationalities. An hour-long open air concert at the U.N.’s main entrance was delivered with gusto as the sharp wind blew off the East River.

As it penetrated the local business community, it is hoped that the sound of vibrant brass also reached the hearts and minds of listening diplomats, business people and tourists–many of whom wanted a photo of this smart looking group.

Appropriate tunes included The Army Comes to Town, ‘Mid All the Traffic, and of course New York, New York.

The Youth Band was privileged to join in the 21st Annual Profile Night, held at the Centennial Memorial Temple, New York City, which resounded to regal massed bands under featured composer, B/M Kenneth Downie.

Downie’s compositions were also presented by the Greater New York Youth Band, the New York Staff Band, and with an impeccable performance by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra’s principal trumpet, Salvationist Philip Smith, of Trumpet Call! and Quiet Time.

In its performance of Princethorpe Variations and Victory Parade, the band was not only complimented upon its playing, but also its deportment and presentation. The Staff Band concluded the evening with a good performance of Victory, underscoring Lt. Colonel Alfred R. Van Cleef’s challenging scripture and associated thought.

Next day there was a quick sightseeing tour of downtown, with all members making timely returns. Later they gave a well-received performance at the Spring Valley Corps

It was their hope that they had left not only their love of Christ’s name, but a reflection of each member’s persona, through attitude and conduct, as they praised God through the wonderful medium of music.
