With a nod to the fact that worship styles in the West are as diverse as its population, the Territorial Music Department is now called the Territorial Music and Worship Development Department. Its newly-hired secretary, Neil Smith, explained the significance of the change; “The West is too culturally diverse for someone at THQ to tell Salvationists in ten divisions how to worship.”

Smith wants to encourage Salvationists in every corps and division to praise the Lord through the arts in the style most effective for them. “This department is here to support all worship efforts.”

Born in Scotland, he received most of his formal musical training in the Royal Military School of Music while serving as a member of the Band of the Scots Guards. He and Dawn, his wife, came to San Diego in 2000. He was previously the divisional Music Director for the Sierra Del Mar Division.
