TEAMS COMPETE AT the March Madness/NFL Alumni Challenge held recently at the Denver Red Shield. |
The Salvation Army Denver Red Shield held its 1st Annual “March Madness Corporate/NFL Alumni Challenge” recently.
It started off with eight teams competing for the right to tip-off against the National Football League Alumni. The first night of action saw the Denver Red Shield, Denver Aztecs, D-Town (Rocky’s Auto), and College View win. Friday evening saw the field narrowed to Denver Aztecs, D-Town, College View, Denver Red Shield and Salvation Army Hawks.
On Saturday, the dark horse, Salvation Army Colorado Hawks (our 17-and 18-year-old team) came from behind to defeat D-Town, Denver Red Shield, and Denver Aztecs to earn the right to play the NFL Alumni at 3:00 p.m. It should be noted that all three games were decided by a total of nine points. It was truly great basketball.
At 2:00 p.m. more than 200 spectators donated $3.00 each for the privilege of participating in our silent auction, NFL autograph signing session, partaking of a hot dog and cold drink and being entertained by Terry Lipsey, who sang the National Anthem, and a rousing half-time performance by The Red Shield Colorado Starlighters. At 3:00 p.m. our NFL/Salvation Army Colorado Hawks game began and in a tight contest, the NFL finished on top.
The real winners however were the seniors and children of The Denver Red Shield Corps. Not only was the event financially successful, it showcased the diverse talents that make up The Salvation Army Denver Red Shield Corps. A good time was had by all!
