The Western Territory’s “Salute to the Common Man,” a six-minute video documentary presenting the work of the Army in the West written by Dr. Robert L. Docter and produced by The Chelmar Group, has been given a prestigious Telly Award.

The video was a finalist in the “Religion” category, and the Army was presented a bronze statuette and certificate. It was the second time the Army has been recognized.

“It is pleasing to have the recognition of the Telly Awards bestowed upon ‘Salute to the Common Man’,” said Comm. Peter H. Chang. “Though it is not our intention to seek such an award, it is indicative of the quality of work of the Western Territory. I congratulate our staff members on their efforts and urge each one of us in our daily lives to be true to the concept portrayed in this video.”

Created by the West’s Territorial Community Relations and Development Department for display at the National Advisory Board Conference in Minneapolis last September, the video has received widespread acclaim.

The Telly Awards was founded in 1980 to showcase and give recognition to outstanding non-network and cable TV commercials. Now in its 17th year, it also includes film and video productions as well as non-network TV.

In the past seven years, the number of entries has nearly tripled. This year, more than 9,000 candidates vied for bronze and silver Tellys.

The panel of judges consisted of more than 20 highly qualified production professionals. They included a cross-section of producers from agencies, TV stations, production houses and corporate video departments. All have previously won a silver Telly-the highest award given.
