‘Soldier of Christ – Well Done!’ PROMOTED TO GLORY

Mrs. Major Irene Robinson went peacefully to be with her Lord recently from Pocahontas, Ark.

Irene Lewis was born in 1919 in Bloomington, Kan. After the death of her first husband she met John Robinson and they were married in 1944. An active soldier of the Rock Hill, S.C., corps, he introduced Irene to The Salvation Army. They entered the School for Officer Training in Atlanta and were commissioned in 1951 as probationary lieutenants. Several appointments in the Southern Territory followed.

In 1977 they transferred to the West, being appointed as corps officers in Pocatello, Idaho and Baker City, Ore. As Majors they retired in Baker City in 1983. Their service continued as they held on at three corps in the Central Territory. They were part of a work and worship team from the Nazarene Church in Baker, Ore., traveling to Nicaragua and Guatemala.

Irene leaves her loving husband of 55 years, John; five children: Eugene Farrar of Houston, William Farrar of Pocahontas, Ark., Roland Farrar of Houston Tx.; Elzena Robinson of Baker City, Ore., and Major Martha Hudson of St. Louis, Mo., as well as two brothers and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The funeral service was held in Baker, with Major Daniel Hudson, son-in-law, officiating.

Captain Howard Tanovan was unexpectedly promoted to Glory recently when he suffered a massive brainstem aneurysm.

Tanovan was born in 1942 in Paksane, Laos. Following service in the Royal Lao Army, he worked for U.S. Aid, where he met his wife, Judy Phimmasone. They married in 1968 and have three children: David, Bonnie and Vicki.

Sponsored by the Lutheran Church, the family came to the U.S. in 1976 and lived in Maryland and Philadelphia, Pa. The Tanovans were enrolled as soldiers in 1993 and worked in the development of Laotian Ministries in Fresno, Stockton, Merced and other communities in the area. They took the rank of Auxiliary Captain in 1994 when Harold was appointed director of Laotian Ministries at divisional headquarters in San Francisco.

In 1997 they were assigned as corps officers at Denver West Adams Corps. They were reassigned in 1998 to Northwest DHQ to open a new Laotian Corps in Tacoma, Wash., then served at Seattle Central Corps as corps officers. Howard completed his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in ministry during these years. The Tanovans were commissioned full captains in 1999.

Howard was a visionary and had many dreams and hopes, especially for the Laotian ministry. He will be greatly missed.

Services were held at the Seattle Temple Corps with Colonel Bruce Harvey (R) officiating and Lt. Colonel Mervyn Morelock (R) leading. Interment followed at the Washington Park Cemetery.

Soldier Promoted to Glory

LENORA MAY ANDERSON–was recently promoted to Glory from Fort Collins, Colo. Born in 1918, she was a faithful soldier of The Salvation Army, representing the corps to the community for more than 40 years. She selflessly raised eight children, while steadfastly performing many volunteer ministries over the years both as a stalwart local officer and as a conscientious and loyal Army employee. Services were held at the Casper, Wyo., corps with Rev. David Roehl officiating.
