Brigadier Norman Charles Bowyer (R) was recently promoted to Glory from Phoenix, Ariz. He was 94 years old.

Norman Bowyer was born in Ebbwvale, Wales, in 1902. He entered the Western Training College from the Los Angeles #2 Corps. Commissioned with the Victory Session in 1926, his first appointment was to command the Sterling, Colo., Corps. Other appointments included the Men’s Social Service Dept. in San Francisco and in Spokane, Wash.

He and Lt. Elsie Dunn were married in 1935 and were then assigned to command corps in La Grande and Klamath Falls, Ore. Divisional staff appointments followed, including divisional and youth secretary for the Border Division. Their final three appointments, spanning 20 years, were as managers of Evangeline residences. They retired from active service in 1968.

Memorial services were held in Phoenix, conducted by Lt. Colonel Olin Hogan, and also at the Chapel of Chimes, Inglewood Cemetery, in Inglewood, Calif., with Lt. Colonel Donald Sather officiating.

Brigadier Bowyer is survived by Mrs. Brigadier Elsie Bowyer (R), his wife of 62 years, and his daughter and son-in-law, Florence and Calvin Brice. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to Mrs. Bowyer at 107-B E. Palm Lane, Phoenix AZ 85004.


A/Captain Harmen Harmen-zon (R) was promoted to Glory recently from El Cajon, Calif., after a lengthy illness.

Harmen was born a third generation Salvationist in 1921, in Groningen, Netherlands. He and Jeanne Malcorps were married in 1951 in Amsterdam. In 1953, they emigrated to Canada when Harmen was recruited to be a musician in the Canadian Military. He served in the military until 1971.

Beginning a second career with The Salvation Army, they became auxiliary captains in 1976 and began service at the Clay Street Social Services Center in Oakland. After training at the Phoenix ARC they ended their active service as administrators of the Santa Barbara ARC, Calif. During his career, Harmen was bandmaster for several corps, including the San Diego Citadel.

Harmen is survived by his loving wife, Jeanne, his daughter Yvonne, son Paul and their families, including five grandchildren.

A celebration of remembrance will be held at the El Cajon Corps led by Brigadiers Robert and Olive Yardley (R). In lieu of flowers the family requests that a donation be sent in his memory to the El Cajon Corps Building Fund. Cards and messages may be sent to: Mrs. A/Capt.
