Promoted to Glory

Captain Clifford George Risby was promoted to Glory October 27 from the Steepleview Care Home in Cranbrook, B.C., Canada. He was born April 15, 1915 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Salvationist parents.

After his marriage to Lavina Larson, he volunteered for the Royal Canadian Air Force as part of The Salvation Army’s war services. After the war he remained active with the Army, and eventually became bandmaster of the Ellice Avenue Corps.

In 1965 the Risbys, responding to a need for youth workers in the U.S., moved to Santa Barbara and later San Jose, CA. They became auxiliary captains in 1970 and served as corps officers in Tucson and Mesa, AZ. In 1975 they were transferred to Monterey, CA, and then to Burbank. Next, the Risbys were appointed resident managers of the Evangeline home in Seattle.

They retired in 1980 and moved to Fernie, British Columbia. Cliff continued to work in retirement, managing a Salvation Army thrift store and also working part time for the probation department.

Captain Risby is survived by his wife Lavina of 60 years, daughter Barbara, three grandsons, and two great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life service was held at The Salvation Army in Cranbrook, B.C. with Captain Ginny Kristensen officiating. Major Joan Shayler officiated at the graveside service in Fernie, B.C.

In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made in Captain Risby’s name to The Salvation Army Corps in Fernie or Cranbrook, B.C.

Expressions of sympathy may be sent to Mrs. Captain Lavina Risby at 326-1901 Willowbrook Drive, Cranbrook, B.C., Canada V1C 6S4.
