A dream conceived nearly two decades ago became a reality for the Napa, Calif. corps, as the remodeling of the facility was completed.
Original plans called for an addition to the kitchen, and adding a walk-in refrigerator/
freezer. Due to the age of the building, however, additional safety and health modifications were required, nearly doubling the cost of the remodeling project. Instead of the projected six months for completion, it took 19 months before the job was done.
During construction, the corps continued with its programs, including the Monday– Friday feeding program, which serves 80-120 and is open to anyone in Napa who needs something to eat.
“We now have a full service kitchen that will not only assist us in our daily feeding program but will also assist us with the different programs we will offer from our building,” said Corps Officer Captain Darren Stratton.
Napa Mayor Ed Henderson cut the ribbon, marking the grand opening of the refurbished building. The annual volunteer dinner was held the same day, and the following people were recognized: Jack Estenson—Volunteer of the Year 2001, and Iris Mason—Volun-teer of the Year 2002.
Clifford Hartle of the Gasser Foundation received the Others Award.
“We have a building that will assist us in better serving the people in the Napa Valley, a building we are very proud of,” said Stratton.
Captains Darren and Courtney Stratton are Napa corps officers, and Captain Larry Feist is associate corps officer.
