Majors Elicio and Darlan Marquez, corps officers in Chula Vista and National City, California, recently received the Human Rights Award from Church Women United, Inc., United Nations Office.

Church Women United chose them for their work in the San Diego South Bay—specifically, their goal to serve the community with dignity. This includes services that strengthen families and bring about change in the community, one person at a time, through a relationship with Jesus Christ. The citation praised them for their focus on promoting diversity in a more inclusive society where there is equal opportunity, acceptance and dignity for all persons—thus creating multicultural understanding—and where racism no longer has power. Their service also promotes healthy lifestyles for women, children and families, including parenting classes, seminars and educational opportunities for all.

“Being recipients of this award is a wonderful way to emphasize what the Army does, and highlights the opportunities for service that we as officers are afforded because we are involved in Salvation Army ministry,” said Major Darlan Marquez. “It is wonderful to receive an award for simply doing what we have been called to do—to strive to effect change in our community by fulfilling The Salvation Army mission.”

Church Women United presents the award to individuals and organizations that stand up for human rights in many different contexts..
