More than 20 Los Angeles, Calif., area business owners have been recognized as role models for all current and future women entrepreneurs for their outstanding achievements by the Los Angeles Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners.

Bobbi Rice, “daughter of the regiment” and faithful vendor, was one of the recipients for her work as head of B. P. Rice & Co., Inc., a public relations firm.

“The impact these women have had on the local business landscape is nothing sort of monumental,” says Patricia Johnson, President of NAWBO-LA and owner of HealthPoint Services.

THANKS TO KIWANIS…

Five Phoenix area Kiwanis Clubs raised $13,500 to fund the purchase of a 15-passenger van for the South Mountain Youth Center and Pre-School. The previous van was stolen, and when recovered it had been vandalized and destroyed. This collaborative fund-raising effort was initiated by Bill Sheely, past president of the Valley of the Sun Kiwanis Club and coordinated by the club. Lts. Robert and Amy Reardon, c.o.’s, gratefully received the donation.

OLDIES MAKE A HIT

Sarah Bentley of Del Oro DHQ recently organized a Planned Giving radio ad campaign with oldies station KCTC. This novel program went smoothly, she reports, and part of the package included a “free” booth at the station’s Senior Spectacular Day in Sacramento, Calif.

Kristen Harkless, Sacramento Citadel soldier, was decked out in an old uniform and handed out doughnuts. This allowed many opportunities to share about the Army and to hear passers-by tell of things the Army had done for them. “It was a thrilling and uplifting event,” Bentley says, “We are going to do it again next year!”

TUCSON RODEO PARADE

The Metropolitan Tucson, Ariz., Salvation Army recently shared a piece of the city’s history as they participated in this year’s 75th Annual La Fiesta de los Vaqueros (Celebration of the Cowboys) Rodeo Parade.

Over 2,000 watched the splendor of this entirely non-motorized parade, which was also televised, and featured more than 200 entries of bands, horses, cowboys and wagons.

A Conestoga wagon commemorating The Salvation Army in its pioneer days carried an old-fashioned band ensemble playing hymn tunes and timbrels. A great show for the Army!

DISASTER PLANNING

FEMA-trained instructors help schools and districts create disaster plans specific to their needs. Goals of the courses include the basic elements; sharing ideas and experience with local schools that have begun the process; identifying local resources such as government, websites, businesses, etc.; and fostering network among participants to continue the planning process following the course. Courses have been held in three counties in the Cascade Division. Look out for FEMA courses in your area.
