We have heard from National Head-quarters that Wal-Mart stores nationwide will select–individually–a local charity to benefit from the contribution of five to ten percent of sales for either December 5 or 6. The decision as to which charity will receive the contributions is up to each local store manager. We encourage local Army representatives to contact Wal-Marts regarding this opportunity.
A TRUE ARMY BOOSTER
Marilyn Quayle, wife of former Vice President Dan Quayle, spoke recently at the Anaheim ARC. “Nobody knows how much good the Army does. Advisory board members need to get the message out about the Army’s programs and services.” With respect to the federal welfare reforms, Mrs. Quayle believes that the Army “will have to step in and pick up the pieces…as it has done, faithfully, so many times before.”
The Quayles live in Phoenix, Ariz., where she serves on the local, as well as the National Advisory Board.

AVIS TO WORK WITH S.A.
Avis Corporation is planning joint projects with The Salvation Army. An initial venture will be the conducting of a canned food drive, with the Army picking up the donations. The National Community Relations and Development department is proceeding with this joint venture in the hope that it will develop into more beneficial programs with Avis in the future
INLAND EMPIRE GIVES THANKS
Six Salvation Army units in California’s Inland Empire provided Thanksgiving meals to the community. They include: Riverside, Ontario, Redlands, Cathedral City, Victor Valley and San Bernardino. Between the six, approximately 2,950 were fed.
In San Bernardino, it was the sixth consecutive year that El Pollo Loco has donated, cooked and helped serve the meal. In Riverside, Arlington High School’s ROTC group assisted in a variety of areas for the 19th straight year.

RALPH TURNS 85
Ralph Powell, retired painter, photographer, and woodworker now soldiering at Santa Maria, Calif., corps, will celebrate his 85th birthday in December. Distinctive wooden name signs made by his loving hands are on desks around the Army world. We miss his smiling face and photography here at THQ and wish Ralph continued blessings for years to come! He is very special to many of us.
