Pendleton warms up
Thanks to the Pendleton, Ore., corps’ Coats for Kids program, children in Eastern Oregon are a bit warmer this winter. More than 140 coats were distributed to 41 families, with assistance from Pendleton Rotary Club volunteers. Captains Rich and June Pease are Pendleton corps officers.
Job Corps gives to Army
The San Bernardino, Calif., corps received a $300 donation from the Inland Empire Job Corps after Job Corps culinary students Deserie Yescas, Patrick Wolfe and Shawn Good won the money for taking second place in a cook-off sponsored by the San Bernardino Convention & Visitors’ Bureau. Winners were required to donate the prize to charity; students at Inland Empire Job Corps have been providing community service to the Army for almost a decade.
Help for bills
The Vail Valley, Colo., Salvation Army received $40,800 in energy assistance funding to help lower-income households in the Eagle River Valley pay their utility bills. Energy Outreach Colorado funded the grant; Holy Cross Energy donated over $26,000 of the $40,800 awarded. “Many seniors, working families and people with special needs are struggling to make ends meet,” said Tsu Wolin-Brown, Salvation Army director and community caseworker. “We’re thankful to be able to provide this resource to the community.”
Two Shields over the Bay
Major C. Patrick Granat, Alameda, Calif., county coordinator, reports that The Salvation Army and the Oakland Raiders have begun a “Two Shields over the Bay” campaign at the Raiders’ football games. According to Granat, cooperative advertising at the home games and over Raider Radio KSFO/KGO is geared to increase kettle income and on-line donations among a population not previously tapped to any great extent. Alameda County Business Administrator John Covert developed the deal.
Moore Street gets a new look
Members of the Portland, Ore., team of Waste Management found an opportunity for community involvement at the Army. Sales Manager Greg Pedersen learned from Corps Officer Major Barbara Sloan that the Moore Street Community and Worship Center needed a paint job. Sloan provided the paint; Waste Management provided the supplies and elbow grease. Mariah, a team member and project manager, is an experienced painter so she gave tips to the crew, making it an efficient and well-executed project.
New appointment
Major Leslie Peacock has been appointed Retired Officers’ Services Director, effective Dec. 1, 2009.
