Reyes recognized
The Human Services Association honored Santa Fe Springs Corps, Calif., Envoy Gilbert Reyes at its 68th annual dinner and awards ceremony, presenting him with the 2009 Spirit Award. He also received recognition from Senator Lucille Roybal Allard, California Assemblyman Hector De La Torre, and County Supervisor Don Knabe.

Home League collects mile of pennies
Joyce Johnston, Seattle Temple, Wash., Home League secretary, reports the HL exceeded its goal of collecting a mile of pennies ($844.80) by raising $1,000; they gave the funds to the Bremerton Corps for its homeless program. According to Johnston, Richard Le Mieux’s book, Breakfast at Sally’s, inspired the donation—when homeless, Le Mieux received assistance from the corps. Major Linda Harmon, Seattle Temple corps officer, presented the check to Bremerton Corps Officer Major Jim Baker.

SF Central Kitchen featured
A popular Bay-area based food blog, Food Wishes, featured The Salvation Army’s Central Kitchen in San Francisco, Calif.; Food Wishes is linked to the national food blogging site, FoodBuzz.com. Chef John of Food Wishes spent the day with the Army’s Chef Anthony Pardi to exchange secrets for preparing that perfect holiday meal, while showcasing The Salvation Army’s meal program in San Francisco. Chef John challenged his followers to participate in the Army’s Turkey Drop Turkey Drive and to donate though the website or by starting their own Online Red Kettle. Citizen of the Year
Diana Gomes, director of The Salvation Army’s Monterey Peninsula, Calif., Good Samaritan Center, received the Naval Post Graduate School’s Omega Psi Phi Omicron Nu Chapter Citizen of the Year Award, recognizing her contribution to the betterment of the community. Congratulations!
