California’s Governor Pete Wilson, a warm friend of the Army, recently demonstrated his support of our programs by declaring December 9-13 “Salvation Army Bell-Ringing Week.” The proclamation was made possible through the efforts of Mr. Pablo Wong, chairman pro-tem of the San Francisco Mission Corps Advisory Council. How fortunate we are to have wonderful friends who assist us in communicating our ministry.
“ON THE WAY” ON THE WAY
Laughter is accompanying Commissioner Will Pratt’s (R) book, “A Funny Thing Happened On…THE WAY,” around the Army world. Major Ralph Looker, Trade secretary, reports that 3,000 copies were ordered and to date nearly 2000 have been sold. There’s still time to put this fine book on your Christmas giving list!
BETHESDA HOUSE VOICE HEARD
Anne Calvo, executive director of Bethesda House in Los Angeles, was recently featured in the popular radio interview program, “Southland Voice.” This is the Army’s shelter for families afflicted with AIDS. Publicity is always appreciated for this important Army program.
PARKING LOT DINING
Captains Joe and Shawn Posillico in Modesto, Calif.,indicate the need for the daily hot lunch program at the downtown Citadel Corps continues to grow. During recent remodeling of the dining room, 450 people were fed a sumptuous barbecue in the parking lot. Meals have now moved back indoors.
WHITE CENTER CELEBRATES
Halloween is but a memory, and so is the great time had by 300 youngsters and adults at the Army’s White Center in Seattle. Captains Maynard and Kathleen Sargent report there were carnival games, food booths, costume judging, and lots of candy-showing that a risky holiday can be safe and fun for gang members and disadvantaged youth, even in the inner city.
GRINCH STRIKES
DURING THE HOLIDAYS
A thief struck the Richmond, Calif., Corps recently, breaking into a storage container and making off with barrels of toys. According to Lts. Gordon and Roberta Myers, all the toys stolen were for 4-to 6-year-old boys.
WELCOME “HOME”
We were pleased to have a visit from Mrs. Commissioner Marion Westcott (R), nee Layman, recently from her home in London following the recent promotion to Glory of her husband, Commissioner Herbert Westcott (R). She is looking well, and it was good for many of her friends to talk over old times with this lovely lady.
