Hoods to Mexico

Majors James and Sallyann Hood are appointed to the Mexico Territory, effective July 2, 2003. Major James Hood will serve as territorial property secretary and director of La Esperanza Rehabilitation Centre; Major Sallyann will serve as territorial social services secretary.

Community Pride Banquet honors North Portland citizens

The Salvation Army paid tribute to some of North Portland’s finest citizens at the recent 7th Annual North Portland Community Pride Banquet, held at the Army’s Moore Street Community and Worship Center. Captain Robert Birks, corps officer, said, “The men and women we are recognizing were chosen not for making a contribution to The Salvation Army, but for making a contribution to the improvement of their community.”
Honored were Bobbie Dore and Bernie Foster, The Skanner newspaper; Assistant Chief Derrick Foxworth, Portland Police Bureau; Postmaster Debbie Hill, Gresham Post Office; Bishop Adolph A. Wells, Emanuel Temple Church; and Joe McFerrin II, Director of Diverse Technical Programs at the Portland Opportunities Industrialization Center. The Volunteer of the Year was Tim Kennedy, a third grade teacher at Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School and volunteer for The Salvation Army Moore Street’s youth programs.

The Unknown Warrior’s tomb in Westminster Abbey, London, was the idea of Rev. David Railton, son of early Salvationist Commissioner George Scott Railton, reports Colonel George Church, who found the information in a 1939 edition of the UK War Cry (November 11, 1939). He reports that the current Dean of Westminster Abbey, Wesley Carr, is the son of Commissioner Arthur Carr, former Chief of the Staff.

San Bernardino packs packets for troops

Major Jacqueline Fritz reports the San Bernardino Girl Guards packed 200 packets of stationary for troops leaving from March Air Force Base. Captain Mandy Perez oversaw the project. In addition, the men from the Path to Prosperity House packed 227 packets. Each packet contained notepaper, envelopes, a pen, and a ‘thank you’ card from the San Bernardino Corps.

Afterschool HELP for kids

The Southeast Communities Corps, in Huntington Park, Calif., is making sure children have help with homework after school. Led by Flor Orosco, the program meets from 3-5 p.m. Monday through Thursday for ages 6-12. The best part is that it’s absolutely free.
