Markiewicz honored
Major Linda Markiewicz, Sierra del Mar divisional commander, was honored by the San Diego Business Journal at its 15th Women Who Mean Business award ceremony. Markiewicz received the Community Leadership Award, one of four awards given to women who are exceptional leaders in their fields. Publisher Armon Mills praised her and The Salvation Army for making a difference in countless lives every day.
Need grows in Clovis
The Clovis, Calif., corps has increased its commodities food distribution boxes by 33 percent, and recently distributed 480 boxes worth of FDA food reports Advisory Council Chair Hap Wood. An 18-member volunteer team packed 64 pounds of food in every box. Distributing the boxes was a challenge: “The Clovis police helped with the traffic, as those at the end of the one and a half mile line were beeped at because they did not appear to be moving,” said Wood. “Our local community food bank recognizes us as the main purveyor of food for the Clovis area.”
Friends in high places
A severe storm last summer in Phoenix, Ariz., destroyed the tall communication tower used by the Southwest Divisions’ emergency disaster services. Installing the new tower and antennas this summer required specialized equipment—which carried a prohibitive rental fee. APS (Arizona Public Service) came to the rescue by providing a crew and heavy equipment. The APS crew worked with TSA ham radio operator volunteers and maintenance personal who assembled the antennas and tower.
Kroc kids are cool
Kids in San Diego, Calif., have enjoyed watching movies this summer—and staying cool—as they sit in inner tubes at the Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Center’s pool.
Moore St. cleans up
Bicyclists with Bike & Build, a non-profit organization that uses bicycling as a vehicle to fund affordable housing projects, were able to shower and clean up at the Portland Moore St. Corps, Ore., during their final days of a cross-country ride. The cyclists left Virginia Beach, Va., on May 17 and reached their final destination of Cannon Beach, Ore. on July 29.
New appointment
Captain Tiffany Lawler has been appointed Teen Officer at the College for Officer Training, effective August 20, 2009.
