This past school year, Kodiak, Alaska Corps Officer Captain Dave Davis was recognized for outstanding volunteerism and commitment to his community. But the recognition was not the direct result of his ministry with The Salvation Army. Instead, Davis was recognized for his volunteer service as a school crossing guard at East Elementary School.

Without funding to pay for crossing guards, parents feared for their children’s safety as they walked to school, particularly during the dark winter months. When learning of the situation, Davis saw the opportunity to serve his community. Each weekday morning and afternoon he reported to the intersections of Rezanoff and Benny Benson Drives to assist the children get to and from school safely.

Davis was one of two volunteers who remained “on the job” throughout the school year. He enjoyed himself more and more as the children and drivers grew to recognize him during the year. Several drivers brought him coffee during the cold winter months and many stopped to express their appreciation for his commitment.

His dedication was cause for recognition in the small community. In addition to having his picture in the newspaper, Davis received a Merit Award from the Kodiak Rotary Club, was recognized as Rotarian of the Year and presented with the club’s Community Service Award. He also received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Kodiak Island School District.
