Come join our Army

by Tanya Pemberton –

I am Tanya Pemberton, 31-years-old. I found the Salvation Army one and a half years ago.

I lived up the street from the Kroc Center and had been a stay-at-home mom with two kids. I needed to find something for my 10-year-old to join and be a part of. We found the Sunbeams troops. I started attending, and I stayed with my daughter at Sunbeams to see what it was all about.

Then I was invited to a women’s ministries group that met at the same time as Sunbeams, and day care was provided for my two-year-old. And then, to top it all off, dinner was served for $1—no cooking on Wednesday nights for me! We all three had a great time every Wednesday night.

It was not long before I was invited to church. The first time I went to church at the Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps I found a family who loved Jesus and it showed in everything they did. It took no time for me to decide I wanted to be a part of this Salvation Army and their mission. I became an adherent on March 23, 2008.

“Tanya only shares part of her story,” says Corps Officer Captain Lisa Van Cleef. “She has also been our caseworker all year. In addition, she began a mom’s workout group on Wednesdays during the troop meetings. She’s a fantastic lady!”
