Major Neal Hogan was awarded a Christian Servant award recently by the Northwest Christian Community Foundation at its third annual Christian Servant Awards luncheon, which was emceed by Paul Linnman, KATU-TV news anchor. Hogan also received $5,000 for the Harbor Light Center and its programs.

A man of few words and a great heart, he has been an inspiration to all who know him. “If any of us need anything we know there is a place to go in Major Hogan,” says Pat Mohr, The Salvation Army’s West Women’s and Children’s Shelter program director. “He is nurturing, non-judgmental, safe and truly kind. His Christ-like humility and gentleness are an inspiration to us all.”

The homeless women and children who come to the West find shelter and transitional programs upon entering. More than 90 percent are survivors of domestic violence. Here they find safety and a chance to begin life again.

As director since 1991 of the Recovery Road programs, which include Harbor Light Center and The West, Hogan has worked tirelessly to provide physical and spiritual comfort to homeless men, women and children.

When the Army assumed administration of “The West” in 1990, staff members were skeptical of the new management, especially by a large religious organization. It is a testament to Hogan’s leadership that all the employees gained immense respect for him — for his unyielding commitment to the West’s clients and unwavering support of the staff.

Prior to his directorship of Recovery Road, there was little collaboration between secular and religious nonprofits; he played a significant role in uniting The Salvation Army, government agencies and secular social service organizations.
