CAPTAIN STEVE SMITH conducts at the Cascade Music Institute 2000.

Under the direction of Divisional Music Director Sylvia McCaw, Cascade Division recently hosted 136 young people at Music Institute 2000. Captain Judy Smith, Ken Dove, Glenn Barlow and Sherrilyn Hall joined special guests Captains Steve and Marcia Smith.

The chorus, timbrel, percussion, band and Worship-In-Motion performances were much appreciated by the 200+ audience. Captain Judy Smith led the senior chorus in two lively numbers, obviously enjoyed by the singers.

Captain Steve Smith presented a composition that had been in his mind for several years, portraying the history of Camp Trestle Glen. Having grown up at this camp, it was an especially memorable time for the Smiths and many of the “old timers” present. Starting with the purchase of the land in 1929, the composition moved to the destruction of the trestle, then to the “prime of life” in the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s. A severe ice storm in 1979 caused extensive damage to the cabins as well as the sewer and water system. Next the music depicted the rebirth of the camp in 1983, inspired by Lt. Colonel Dave Riley and made possible by a generous donation by the family of Dr. Reuben H. Kuratli.

Throughout the week the young people could not only improve musically, but also examine their relationship with Jesus Christ. Following this time of great music and fellowship, a barbecue was held for those who had at one point in their lives either been campers or staff members at one of the music camps since 1929. Those able to attend came from as far away as Gig Harbor, Wash., to Klamath Falls, Ore. There was a turnout of 55, including guests and their families.

Ninety percent of the 136 campers either gave or renewed their dedication to the Lord by the week’s end.
