College student Jennifer Crowell shares some of her experiences in Hawaii.
by Jennifer Crowell –
I am enrolled in five classes at Hawaii Pacific University—political science, HPU Sea Warrior Band, writing and, my favorites, French and sociology. I have taken a few responsibilities at the Kauluwela Corps: singing company and songster leader and as one of the corps pianists.
Although I can’t be there all the time, I join the Revolution Hawaii team in Honolulu’s Chinatown, praying and serving food to those who need it most. I have had many experiences that are life changing and memories that I wouldn’t trade in a million years. There is something spiritual about praying with people who really need the Lord the most. I am constantly reminded how human I am and how important it is to consistently love the people around me.
Several weeks ago, I slept in Chinatown as a homeless person with the Revolution Hawaii team. Eight of us—with no blankets, no food and only our shorts and the shirts on our backs—were completely humbled to ask for help from the same people that we serve. Receiving a blanket from someone who only owns a few things confined to a stolen grocery cart is one of the most beautiful acts of love I have witnessed.
Serving is not the same as it used to be; it’s not serving—it’s fun and simply loving people. I can’t explain the amount that I have grown in my faith the past few weeks. Though I miss everyone at home, I know this is right where I’m supposed to be. God has been good to me, and I learn something new about him every day.
The most important thing that I have acquired here is the new addition to my family. The Revolution Hawaii team is more than just my missionary team—they are brothers and sisters who fight with me in spiritual combat on the streets. The kids at the corps love Jesus and are the future of the church; they are beautiful. The adults are the people I go to when I need some spiritual advice or simply need a smile. They are my family, and I love every one of them.
Here is my information if anyone wants to get in touch with me.
