the widow’s mite. corps receives a touching donation. a surprise awaited kettle workers at the salvation army in salem, ore., as they emptied the money from one of the red kettles. rolling out of the salem corps’ kettle was a note–folded up and taped together with something inside it. major jerry ames, marion/polk county coordinator, took the small package, carefully removed the tape and unfolded it. the note–written on a piece of christmas paper–simply read: “please use this to share god’s love. it is appraised at $500-600. it is all i have to give.”. accompanying the message was a half-carat, white gold engagement ring. “our hearts and prayers go out to the anonymous giver, believing whatever the circumstances, this person will be blessed,” ames said.
