Officials have served 465 families in the wake of Tropical Cyclone Dineo
The Salvation Army in Mozambique is responding to the first cyclone to make landfall in the country in a decade.
Tropical Cyclone Dineo struck the coastal province of Inhambane in February before moving along the coast to the capital, Maputo. Winds in excess of 110 miles per hour left eight people dead and caused destruction to homes and infrastructure.
Experienced emergency responders Lt. Colonel Comfort Adepoju from the Nigeria Territory and Captain Heather Rossouw from the Southern Africa Territory will oversee The Salvation Army’s response for the International Emergency Services section of the Army’s International Headquarters. They will work closely with government representatives, the local Salvation Army—particularly territorial projects officer Major Dyson Chifudzeni—and Non-Governmental Organizations.
Officials are focusing relief efforts on feeding services, especially to those who are homeless. The Salvation Army has distributed food boxes to 465 families in four locations—Maxixe and central, south and rural Inhambane. The boxes include flour, rice, cooking oil and beans. The Salvation Army is also providing baby meals to families with young children.
