NFL pro encourages kids to get out and play.
San Diego Chargers football player offensive tackle Marcus McNeill—famous for his tackles on the field—took on a different battle July 22 when he visited The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center to encourage 300 children in the center’s summer day camp to get in shape and stay fit.
Major Lee Lescano, Sierra del Mar divisional commander, officially opened the event. After McNeill addressed the kids, sharing the importance of fitness and exercise, camp counselors and Mack’s Miracles—McNeill’s personal foundation—volunteers helped guide the campers through six physical activity stations with McNeill joining them.
“It’s really about getting out and being more fit and living a healthier lifestyle,” McNeill said. “I am glad to see everybody come out and give their support.”
The children enjoyed giveaways from Pirates Booty, Gatorade and Kaiser Permanente. Kaiser’s Mobile Health Unit was onsite for tours, where the campers received free pens, chapstick, sunscreen and Band-Aids.
Prior to the event, TV station Fox 5 went live from the recreation field using McNeill and the children playing football as background. Station KUSI video recorded the campers, Lescano’s opening remarks and an interview with McNeill. A photographer and journalist from local newspaper The San Diego Union-Tribune also attended.
