Division’s trail run helps send kids to camp.

Recently, more than 400 runners of all ages and walks of life participated in the 4th annual 10K/5K trail run at Mt. Crags, the Southern California Division’s camp location in the Santa Monica Mountains. This year’s theme, “Run in their shoes,” inspired running enthusiasts to help send children to camp.
Every year, more than 2,000 young people, many from low-income inner city families, enjoy a week in the wilderness at camp. For many of these children, this week represents their first experience in the woods, away from city life. Others, even some born and raised in Los Angeles, will see the Pacific Ocean for the first time.
This year’s event saw a marked increase in participation both from individuals and group registrants, including Cheesecake Factory employees and members of organizations like “Moms in Motion.”
The level of community involvement encouraged Kasey Tribble, community resource specialist for the Southern California Division and trail run organizer. “The reason these summer camps exist is to bring a little happiness into the lives of deserving kids,” he said. “To see so many members of the community come out to help support that mission was truly inspiring.”
Tribble hopes to continue growing this event, bringing in more running enthusiasts and corporate partners in the future so that even more young people may have the experience of a Salvation Army summer camp.
