The recent Southern California Division’s Music Councils were a blend of talented guests and God-honoring music. Highlight of the event was the “Festival of Praise,” when a full house of delegates and guests packed the Pasadena Tabernacle.

The Torrance Gospel Choir (known as “Psalm 151”), directed by Tom Freeman, presented an exciting Gospel program. They were backed by a talented trio: Kevin Larsson (piano), Troy Griffin (drums), and Richard Bosanko (guitar).

Territorial Music Director Ivor Bosanko introduced special guest Bandmaster Richard Phillips, who is currently director of the Army’s premier corps band, Enfield (North London). Phillips, the first lay person to hold the position of the Army’s Head of Music Editorial, was able to share his insights into the compositions.

B/M Lambert Bittinger led the Tab Band in spirited renditions, and Jude Gottrich presented a delightful medley of choruses.

The Pasadena Timbrels, led by Sharon Docter Mundy, delivered a sparkling display to Bill Gordon’s “Shine Down.” The Torrance Band showed the impressive results of many rehearsals, while the beautiful cornet and euphonium playing of Capt. Terry Camsey and Chris Mallet in Goff Richards’ “Shepherd’s Song” was spiritually uplifting.

Lt. Col. Sherryl Van Cleef, divisional director of Women’s Organizations, shared the Scripture of the healing of the lame man by Peter and John.

The Tabernacle Songsters stirred the hearts of the listeners with “March On,” an exciting choral work by Graeme Press. Gottrich expressed her joy in frequently introducing the Songsters on her radio program.

Before the “Festival of Praise,” musicians gathered for workshops with the talented guests. Though differing personalities, Gottrich and Phillips proved that they are very similar in their love for the Lord and music-making. Many profited from expert instruction, and the music of the afternoon program blessed, inspired, and, for some brought spiritual healing.
