Friends and loved ones joined with Commissioners Lawrence and Wilma Smith (R) at the Torrance, Calif., corps, recently to share in the celebration of their 60th wedding anniversary. In a moving moment at the conclusion of the morning worship service, Commissioner David Edwards, joined by Commissioner Doreen Edwards, called the Smiths to the front of the chapel and offered a prayer of thanksgiving for their many years of marriage.
Afterwards, the congregation adjourned to the fellowship hall for a reception. Captain Don Gilger, corps officer, read a tribute from their son Brian. CSM Bob Bearchell presented a candidate recruitment film from 60 years ago, featuring the Smiths as young officers, which was received with delight.
Mrs. Judy Jones, representing the soldiers of the corps where the Commis-sioners have faithfully served since their retirement, spoke of their sincerity, gracious influence and role as models for other couples. Commissioner Wilma Smith served as coordinator of the prayer chain for a number of years.
A niece, Captain Judy Smith, spoke for the family as she recounted experiences shared by the extended Smith clan. Major Carol Pontsler expressed appreciation for their involvement with the senior citizens’ program, the “GEMS.”
Dolores Jimenez presented the Smiths with a “blessing book” containing letters, cards and good wishes from their many friends. Each tribute emphasized that they are truly fine Christians who have given devoted service to God and the Army.
Mrs. Commissioner Wilma Smith responded with thanks to all who participated for their kind words and gratitude to God for his faithfulness to them through the years. Major Joe Hoogstad, a nephew, brought the closing prayer.
