The U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded $3.4 million to The Salvation Army for the construction of 50 low-income senior housing units in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The funding will allow the second phase of construction, bringing the total number of units at the Silvercrest, which is located next to the Colorado Springs Corps, to 100.
“Currently, there is a two to three year wait for affordable housing for seniors in Colorado Springs,” stated Major Stephen Owen, corps officer and El Paso, Colo., county coordinator. “The new construction will be an oasis for senior citizens.”
The units are slated to be completed by the end of 1999.
