“Shout for joy to the Lord!” was the theme at The Salvation Army camp at King’s Lake in Alaska, with a record 66 music campers participating.
This year’s music camp was led by Bandmaster David and Beryl Mallett from Portsmouth, England. Cornets, trumpets, clarinets, flutes, assorted brass, timbrelists, vocalists, and guitarists all joined together to learn and improve their skills.
Electives included creative ministries, which featured “hip-hop” type dancing, and a drama course, “Readers’ Theater.” A new concept this year was the introduction of “Recital Night” where not only soloists, but also ensembles were welcomed.
The guitar class featured classical techniques, with students learning to play individual notes, presenting “Etude” by Frederick Noad and “Jesus Loves Me” at the final concert.
All the students shone as they performed for family and friends, showcasing all they’d learned over the week. Mary Davey (Ketchikan) and Ruth Hughes (Petersburg) were honored as the outstanding vocalist and instrumentalist respectively. In addition to receiving trophies, they represented the Alaska Division at WMI this summer.
Rebecca Choi (Anchorage Korean) and Thomas Harris (Juneau) were presented with Honor Camper trophies. They received a scholarship to attend music camp next summer at King’s Lake.
