The Salvation Army in Sacramento, Calif., broke all records recently by raising over $290,000 at its 14th Annual Community Luncheon.
Every year, the Army gives the Partners in Community Service award to an individual or company in the community who is truly making a difference to enhance and develop Salvation Army programs and services. With over 1,400 business and government leaders in attendance, the 2005 event proudly celebrated The Salvation Army––Sacramento’s 120th Anniversary and honored Dave Higgins, Sr. and Harbison-Mahony-Higgins Builders, Inc. (HMH).
HMH has been a presence in the Sacramento community since 1957 and is known for its superior industry leadership and strong commitment to giving back to the community. Every year, volunteers from HMH dismantle the Sacramento Association of Realtors Christmas CanTree, where thousands of canned goods and over $135,000 are donated to The Salvation Army’s Christmas food program. Dave Higgins, Sr. was the president of HMH for 20 years. Now, in his retirement years, he continues to be a corporate champion for several of HMH’s projects.
The Army’s programs and services in Sacramento were highlighted during the luncheon. A testimonial from George Oliver, a Sacramento ARC graduate, was also featured. George had been addicted to drugs for several years, losing his connection with his family and feeling distraught and lost in life. He came to the Sacramento Adult Rehabilitation Center and his life began anew. George stated: “I am thankful for The Salvation Army because I got my life and my family back!”
The event is the largest fundraising luncheon in the Sacramento region. Since its inception 14 years ago, the luncheon has raised over $2.7 million to support programs and services of The Salvation Army in Sacramento.
