‘Soldier of Christ – Well Done!’ PROMOTED TO GLORY |
Two Great Ladies–a Lifetime of Service
Following a stroke in August, Brigadier Sara Jones (R) entered into Heaven peacefully from the Sherman Village Health Care Center in North Hollywood, Calif.
Sara Hayes was born in 1906 in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada, and gave her heart to the Lord at 9 years of age. She entered the Training College in San Francisco out of Havre, Mont., and was commissioned with the Fidelity Session in 1927. While serving as secretary to the Principal, she met Cadet Jack Jones.
In 1930 Sara was appointed to the Honolulu Girls’ Home and as assistant at the Waioli Tea Room. After Jack was transferred to the Islands in 1930 they were married. During their stay in Hawaii they were blessed with a son, William.
In 1933, both having problems with the tropical climate, they were transferred to serve at three corps in Southern California. In 1940 they transferred to Seattle as Young People’s secretaries.
Future appointments took them to Lytton, Denver Citadel, Phoenix Citadel, Tucson, and a crisis that would leave her widowed in 1954.
She continued at Southern California Divisional Headquarters and retired in 1970 with 43 years of active service. Until her last illness she lived with her daughter, Catherine.
The committal service took place at Inglewood Memorial Park, with Col. Donald G. Sather officiating. A Celebration of Life will be held on October 24th at the San Fernando Valley Corps, led by Comm. Orval Taylor (R).
Messages of sympathy may be sent to Catherine Kenedy-Jones at 6512 Tujunga Ave. North Hollywood, CA 91606-2631.
Brigadier Erma Garman (R) was recently promoted to Glory from the Fairlawn Good Samaritan Health Center in Gresham, Ore. She was 95 years old.
Erma was commissioned at the Training College as a member of the 100% Session in June 1923. Her first assignment was to the Fillmore Corps in San Francisco. Under her leadership the corps enjoyed a spiritual revival, with over 350 seekers at the altar during that year. Other corps appointments followed in California and in Idaho and Montana.
Garman served many terms of duty at the Training College as Education Officer, and also served four years as Women’s Chief Side Officer.
Her most colorful experience was in the Hawaiian Islands, where for three years she was superintendent of the Girls’ Home and Waioli Tea Room in Manoa Valley. Superintendent of the Los Angeles Day Nursery was her next assignment, and more appointments to the Training School followed. From 1954 until retirement in 1963 she was the Territorial Education Secretary.
A graveside service was held at the Oddfellows Cemetery in The Dalles, Ore. Captain Pam Church officiated. A memorial service at the Gresham Corps was later led by Major Kurt Burger.
Expressions of sympathy may be sent to her sister-in-law, Jean Garman, at 578 Fleming, Gresham OR 97030
