Ardys Newbould: a life lived for others
Surrounded by her family and close friend Lt. Colonel Della Rees, Lt. Colonel Ardys Newbould was peacefully promoted to Glory on May 11, 2003 from the Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.
Ardys Smith was born April 9, 1914 in St. Helens, Oregon, but the family moved to California when Ardys was a child. The Smiths attended Angeles Temple Foursquare Church where Ardys was converted at age 16.
In her late teens, Ardys was invited to The Salvation Army. She immediately fell in love with the Army, and soon felt called to serve as a minister. She first served as a lay assistant at the Long Beach, Calif. corps, where she met Victor Newbould.
Ardys entered the Training College out of the Long Beach #1 corps, and was commissioned in 1934 with the Do and Dare Session. As a single officer, she served as assistant and then as corps officer in several corps in the West.
In 1940, three years after Victor Newbould was commissioned as an officer, he and Captain Ardys Smith were married.
Together they served as corps officers in Reno, San Diego Citadel and Los Angeles Tabernacle Corps.
In 1962 Victor was appointed divisional commander and Ardys Home League secretary of the Intermountain Division. In 1967 they assumed leadership of the Training College, and in 1971 they moved to THQ, Victor as staff secretary and Ardys as Nurse’s Fellow-ship and Order of the Silver Star secretary.
They spent their last eight years before retirement in the Northern California and Nevada Division, Victor as divisional commander and Ardys as women’s ministries director.
The Newboulds retired in 1981 to Santa Rosa, Calif., where they were active in the corps. Victor preceded Ardys to heaven in 1997.
Ardys was known as a warm and loving person, willing to open her heart and home to others.
Colonel George Church officiated at the memorial service in Santa Rosa.
