Promoted to Glory

Frances E. Dart was promoted to Glory on February 11, 2003 from Walnut Manor in Anaheim, Calif. Born June 21, 1913, in Alameda, Calif., Frances was always interested in drama and enrolled at the Pasadena Playhouse. Later, she formed a Christian drama group, The Samaritan Players, which performed in corps and churches in the area. She appeared in all the Gowans and Larsson musicals produced by the Southern California Division.

A Pasadena Tabernacle corps soldier for 80 years, Frances was named “Soldier of the Year” by the Southern California Division in 1989. Although her last years were spent fighting Alzheimer’s disease, she remained a faithful Christian and loyal Salvationist.

She is survived by her daughters, Major Judy Nottle (and son-in-law Bill), Susan Spencer (and son-in-law Jim), and four grandchildren: Kevin and Christopher Cook, and Keith and Keri Spencer. Messages of condolence may be sent to Major Judy Nottle at 4015 Hummingbird Way, Clayton, CA 94517 and Susan Spencer at 20236 Edgemont Pl., Walnut, CA 91789.

Long time Salvationist Vina Schmandt was promoted to Glory on February 13, 2003 in Anacortes, Washington at the age of 91.

Vina was enrolled as a senior soldier at the Anacortes Corps in 1929 where she served faithfully for over 73 years. She held local officer positions of YPSM, Company Guard, Sunday school teacher, Girl Guard chaplain, corps treasurer and Home League secretary. She was a loving and caring person who was devoted to the work of the Lord.

While Vina, who was married to Leo Schmandt for 46 years before his death in 1985, had no children of her own, she raised her niece, Mrs. Major Phyllis Schaal (nee Soper) who served over 34 years as a Salvation Army officer.

A time of remembrance was held at the Anacortes Corps with Captain Michael Paugh officiating.
