While the community of Petersburg, Alaska, celebrated its annual Little Norway Festival recently, advisory board members, friends, officers and soldiers of the Petersburg Corps also celebrated the opening of their new thrift store.
On a rare sunny afternoon, more than 100 people witnessed the dedication service. Some were dressed in traditional attire suitable for the Little Norway Festival. The crowd was greeted by the commanding officers Majors Daniel and Verna Hughes, Divisional Commander Lt. Colonel Terry W. Griffin and Divisional Secretary Major C. Joe Murray.
Mayor Jeff Meucci gave words of greeting “This store is a fine addition to our community,” Meucci said. Advisory board member John Johnson outlined the project’s history and made reference to many who had helped with it. “After many years we finally have a new store that we can be proud of,” Johnson said. “And it is paid for,” he added.
Major Daniel Hughes shared words of appreciation. “The people of Petersburg are caring people who work together to complete worthy projects. This store is the result of many who have worked together towards one goal.” During the dedication, Griffin emphasized the vital role thrift stores play in the ministry of The Salvation Army.
“This store will be instrumental in meeting the needs of people and it will help to change lives,” Griffin said.
