Major Phyllis Althea Griffin, 89, was promoted to Glory Feb. 20 from Pueblo, Colo.
Born July 28, 1926 in Colorado, Griffin eventually earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Colorado. She served as a hospital nurse before being commissioned as a Salvation Army officer in 1951 with The Ambassadors Session. She served for eight years in the Portland White Shield Home and Hospital as the director of nursing services.
Griffin served in Booth Memorial Homes in Portland and Los Angeles, and as administrator in Denver and Spokane, Wash., before being appointed Health Services Director at the School for Officers Training in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. She was also a frequent participant in the Protestant Health and Welfare Assembly and the American Hospital Association Conventions.
In retirement, Griffin was active in the Pueblo Corps.
She is survived by her brother, Bob Griffin; cousin, Roger Babnick; and “adopted” daughters, Rietta Simpson and Diana Rodriguez.
A celebration of life service was held Feb. 20 at the Pueblo Corps, with Lt. Colonel Ron Strickland officiating.
