Sept. 17, 1932–July 21, 2019
Major Dorothy Osbourn was promoted to Glory July 21 from Sunrise Care Home in Carmichael, California.
The youngest of two children, Dorothy was born Sept. 17, 1932, in Wagoner, Oklahoma, to Bertha and Clarence Redfern. When Dorothy was a young child, the family moved to Salem, Oregon, where she eventually met her future husband, Kenneth Osbourn.
Dorothy married Ken in 1949, and after he served 20 years in the U.S. Army, the Osbourns entered The Salvation Army School for Officers’ Training. They were commissioned in 1970 with the Undaunted Session.
Prior to commissioning, they were sent into the field as Cadet Lieutenants as Redwood City (California) Corps Officers. Post-commissioning appointments took them to Denver Citadel, Denver Red Shield and Denver Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC); Honolulu ARC, Territorial Headquarters Men’s Social Service Department; Phoenix ARC; Oakland, California, ARC; Corps Officers in Chico, Modesto and San Jose, California, and Reno, Nevada.
In 1997, after 28 years of service, they retired in Sacramento, California.
A talented artist, Dorothy loved to paint. She also enjoyed arts and crafts, creating beauty from unlikely items. Most of all, she loved the Lord and lived to serve him.
She is survived by her five daughters: Deborah Flagg, Terry Rhoades, Julie Kidder, Andrea Mathew and Emily Jones, and by 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life service took place July 27 at East Lawn Memorial Park in Sacramento with Major Ivan Wild officiating.
