Writers and editors from around the world will convene in Alexandria, Virginia April 22-29 for The Salvation Army’s second International Literary and Publications Conference.

More than 130 delegates from 33 territories—including 13 from the West—have enrolled for the week-long series of seminars and workshops, conceived to help Salvationist editors and writers present the gospel persuasively to the world so ‘that they may know [Jesus Christ]…whom to know is life eternal.’ (John 17:3)
“The conference will enhance the Army’s literary and publishing ministry,” said conference director Lt. Colonel Marlene Chase, national editor in chief and literary secretary. “Its purpose is to cultivate skills in writing and journalism, to train personnel in these fields, and to help prepare for the decade ahead in our publications.”

Author and keynote speaker Philip Yancey, and creativity specialist and motivator C. McNair Wilson, are special guests. United session speakers are Robin Bryant, United Kingdom; Commissioner Philip Needham, Southern territorial commander; Colonel Henry Gariepy, author and former national editor in chief; Lynda Boardman, Word/Action Publications; and Major Barbara Sampson, international headquarters.
The 33 workshops slated include: “Graphics on a shoestring,” “Copyediting,” “Finding your unique voice,” “Devotional writing,” and “Publishing ethics.”

“There’s something for everyone,” stated Chase. “Whether newly appointed to editorial work or a seasoned professional, a developing writer or a wordsmith, you will find helpful information and inspiration.”
Dr. Robert Docter, New Frontier Publications editor in chief, will present “Effective editorials” and Sue Schumann Warner, executive editor, will present “Newswriting.” Together, they will present “Elements of an effective publication.”
