Salvationist is recognized for his community work.
Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of your Lord (Matt. 25:23 KJV).
Burbank (Calif.) City Council members recognized John Oliva on May 11, 2010, for his dedication and commitment to the community. Oliva received acknowledgments by the City of Burbank; Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, the State of California; and state senate and Los Angeles County officials.
Oliva has been a Salvationist for the past 30 years. “Diverse” and “long” are two words that describe the 30-year relationship between Oliva and The Salvation Army. Its longevity is equaled only by two other events: Oliva’s move to Burbank 48 years ago and his marriage to his wife Jan 36 years ago. All three relationships are still going strong.
In his work with the Burbank Corps, Oliva shows no preferences. Whether serving children or adults, he is ready and willing to do whatever he can. He has been a mentor, driver and teacher. He serves as Community Care Ministries secretary and is active in organizing outings to nursing and convalescent homes and hospitals. When not planning programs, Oliva is directly involved with the residents.
Oliva also enjoys working with the Gideon Society and introducing high school students to Bible study.
Oliva’s commitment to his family, faith and volunteer work makes him an outstanding role model for The Salvation Army and the Burbank community.
