by John Docter –
This April, the International Staff Band, the Army’s premiere brass band from London, England, will be making its first visit to the West in nearly 20 years.
Under the leadership of Bandmaster Stephen Cobb, and Executive Officer Major Ian Barr, the International Staff Band (ISB) will conclude its 17-day tour of the Southern and Western Territories with performances in Denver, Colo. (April 26, 7:00 p.m.); Phoenix, Ariz. (April 27, 7:00); Portland, Ore. (April 28, 7:30 p.m.); Walnut Creek, Calif. (April 29, 7:00 p.m.); and Pasadena, Calif. (April 30, 7:30 p.m.).
While in Pasadena, the band will also perform at the National Advisory Organizations Conference and participate in Sunday worship services at the Pasadena Tabernacle.
“From my earliest recollection this band has maintained a high standard,” said Bandmaster Ivor Bosanko, music secretary for the Western Territory. “It has been a yardstick for all musical sections in excellence of performance and deportment.”
Derek Helms, Del Oro divisional music coordinator, hopes the band will inspire local musicians to strive to give their best for God. “We are praying that through this event, God will be glorified,” he said.
Since its creation more than 100 years ago, the ISB has sought to present the very best in musical ministry and communicate the Christian Gospel to all its listeners. It counts many Salvationist musical legends among its former bandmasters and soloists.
The group tours extensively–internationally and within the UK–and continues to add to its long list of recordings. Its music is also frequently featured on British radio broadcasts.
The present group, even measured against its own historically high standards, is widely considered to be at the top of its form.
“Last year, I had the pleasure of hearing [the ISB] in London at the Royal Albert Hall,” Bosanko said. “It was a wonderful experience!”
Additional concert details, including locations and ticket information, can be obtained by contacting the divisional headquarters in the areas where the International Staff Band will be performing. “Make sure you hear this great band,” Bosanko added. “I can promise that their programs will include music that will satisfy everyone’s musical taste.”
