BY CAPTAIN CATHI BOYD –
“I came along to have some fun this weekend, but I’m going home on fire!” one Salvationist responded when asked how he enjoyed the Northwest Division’s Family Camp, held at Camp Arnold.
With the theme, “Heart’s Ablaze” and a goal of restoring passion in the new millennium, Divisional Leaders Majors Ron and Pam Strickland welcomed Colonels Thomas and Mary Lewis from national headquarters. The Colonels shared from their hearts a vision of God’s gift of life-changing passion for all who sincerely seek it.
The weekend was full of passion-building activities, including TEAM seminars on various topics. Guests Captains Judy Smith and Carlos Gonzzatti taught “Understanding People” and “Hispanic Corps Renewal.” Major Chuck Gillies and Envoy Nigel Cross taught “Lifestyle Evangelism” and “Spiritual Gifts.” Teens challenged their abilities on the camp’s ropes course and during their own “afterglow” meeting.
For many, the highlight was the open air passion play “Jesus of Nazareth.” Now in its 19th season, the entire family camp went to the nearby amphitheater to enjoy the play. Adults and children alike were fascinated by the sights and sounds of a cast of more than 1,000 from 25 churches. The portrayal of Christ’s torture and death brought home for many God’s passionate love for humankind.
Building on this foundation, on Sunday morning, Lewis spoke of the burning hearts of the disciples on the Emmaus road when they encountered the risen Christ and invited the congregation to allow God to renew their passion.
During the service accepted candidates Mike and Nancy Halverson were fare-welled; Majors Calvin and Glenda Prouty and Majors Arthur and Eugenia Watson were recognized for 25 years of service as officers, and A/Captain Donna Hooft was commissioned as a full captain.
