Gariepy uncovers treasures in Psalms

With more than 20 books to his credit–biographies, devotionals, and Salvation Army history among them–former National Editor in Chief and Literary Secretary Colonel Henry Gariepy now takes a fresh look at the Psalms.

In Treasures from the Psalms Gariepy treats us to 100 meditations from the “devotional treasury of the ages,” focusing on 45 of the most meaningful and inspiring psalms.

Each meditation opens the door to the psalm’s depth and richness through a brief commentary that places a selected verse in cultural, historical or spiritual context, while anchoring it to a practical application for Christian living.

Often, quotes from authors, philosophers or historians such as C.S. Lewis, Fenelon, or Alexander Solzhenitsyn provide additional insight into the psalm’s relation to Christian life. Each chapter concludes with a brief prayer.

In the chapter titled, “Remembered by God” (Psalm 103:14), Gariepy observes “life is fragile and finite”…yet, “God knows us, he remembers us…the infinite span of God’s love overarches each person’s brief moment of time.”

In “The Lord’s Provision” (Psalm 23:3a) he recalls Thomas Moore’s 1994 bestseller, Care of the Soul, and Moore’s observation that “The great malady of the twentieth century, implicated in all of our troubles and affecting us individually and socially is the loss of soul.” Yet, says Gariepy, ” ‘He restores my soul’ is the Shepherd’s provision for renewal.”

Treasures from the Psalms is ideal for devotional reading, for personal or group study, or for gift giving and is sure to enrich the souls of readers everywhere.
