by Captain Robert L. Rudd –
The Community Relations and De-velopment Depar-tment hosted Captains Edward and Mercy Addison recently during their three-month visit to the West as part of Ghana’s future leadership plan. We did our best to introduce the Addisons to the essential functions and procedures of the department, the services/resources we provide, and how our work relates to the field.
TRUE TO THE END
Teodora Valencia, from San Francisco’s Mission District Corps, was promoted to Glory at age 102 after years of loyal service to the Army’s League of Mercy. According to Major Gerde Ramos, “She walked to the corps from her home and remained lucid until just before her death. She visited patients until she could no longer move out of bed.”
With her 82-year-old daughter Blanca, Mrs. Valencia visited the sick and homebound, sent cards of recovery or condolence and wrapped gifts for convalescent homes. A native of Honduras, she became an American citizen at the age of 99.
THINGS COOKING AT HENDERSON
Divisional leaders Lt. Colonels Olin and Diane Hogan were recently pleased to find a bounteous meal at the Henderson, Nev., Corps had been prepared by Lieutenant Mark Gilden, while Lieutenant Vicki Gilden shared the Gospel in a soul-satiating way. “Their children are great!” reported the Hogans after a fine meal and fellowship with Lieutenants Osei and Lynn Stewart, Lieutenants Benjamin and Rebecca Bosque, and the Gildens.
WOODILL HONORED
At the monthly meeting of the Los Angeles Metropolitan Advisory Board (led by Chairman Mike Birkholm), Alfred Woodill was presented with a Member Emeritus Certificate. Much of the work of the Advisory Board goes on without public acclaim, and we are grateful for those who devote many years to the Army’s service.
EYE FOR THE FUTURE
The Burbank Corps, (Captains Charles and Shari Fowler, Lts. Sean and Kendall Philips), has a concern for the present and an eye for the future. Not only is a Spanish-speaking ministry being developed within the corps, but they are giving oversight and nurture to the Pacoima-Arleta Outpost. Newly-commissioned Envoy Fernando Rivas has been entrusted with the growth and development of this new ministry. His wife, the social worker for the corps, is an able assistant.
