by Captain Robert L. Rudd –
Our New Frontier managing editor, Sue Warner, will soon return from the Caribbean. Vacation? Not hardly! In the company of Colonels Dennis and Noella Phillips, territorial leaders, she is on a blitz tour, including Jamaica, Haiti the Dominican Republic and Cuba. We may be sure that there will soon be exciting pictures and stories about it in this paper.
ARMY STANDS BY
Two tornadoes touched down recently in Jackson, Tenn., causing considerable damage. One subdivision was totally destroyed, and nine people lost their lives. When you hear of tornadoes, you may be sure the Army canteen will be on hand right away. Relief personnel from Memphis soon joined those in the city to serve as long as needed.
NEW DESIGNATION FOR A/CAPTAINS IAN AND ISOBEL ROBINSON
The Santa Barbara corps officers were recently promoted to full captain by Southern California Divisional Commander Alfred R. Van Cleef.
KIDS WOWED BY CELEBS
The Salvation Army’s Phoenix South Mountain Youth Center celebrated New Years in style. As hosts of the NCAA/Fiesta Bowl Yes Football Clinic, the Center invited 500 at-risk youth to attend a series of skill-building and training workshops. The clinic was an amazing success. College coaches from across the country taught football skills and conditioning.
A real bonus was the appearance of several guests, including the Florida Seminoles football team, and three former Heisman Trophy winners, Tony Dorsett, Gale Sayers and Rickie Williams. Each met with the kids, providing encouraging words. The children were star-struck.
Then, Senator John Glenn and the rest of the Challenger crew arrived on the scene, dressed in their flight suits. The children were able to shake hands with the astronauts and ask questions about space.
POTATO BAR AT THQ
Disturbed by the plight of children with AIDS in South Africa, the Territorial Youth Department (Majors Rudy and Judy Hedgren) recently sponsored a “Potato Bar Lunch,” where employees and officers could enjoy fabulous spuds and fixings with proceeds going to HOPE 10/10, that good cause. An original idea, and a welcome lunch for us!

LOM BUSY AT SIERRA DEL MAR
Captain Janene Zielinski, divisional League of Mercy director, says City Heights, a newer corps, is enjoying their LOM experiences. They are told some of the residents at “Happy Villa” take seats up to an hour ahead because they look forward so much to the visits.
LOM members at Escondido cooked for a men’s AIDS center and the band took part in some services–a real blessing for the people.
Murrieta has been going to the Alzheimer’s unit. Oceanside Singing Company performed their children’s musical “It All Happened in the Country” at the Silvercrest next door to the corps.
APPRECIATION EXPRESSED
Mike Birkholm, chairman of the Los Angeles Metro Advisory Board, is grateful for the many expressions of sympathy he has received since the death of his mother, Janet Birkholm.
BY ANY OTHER NAME…
Our apologies to the good League of Mercy people of Roseville, Calif. In the last issue we mistakenly credited their thoughtful rest home lap quilt idea to Roseburg, Ore. Our fingers made us do it!
