ODD FELLOWS TO HELP
Capt. George Rocheleau, Santa Clara’s energetic county coordinator, recently met with the executive director of the Grand Lodge of California to discuss how the Odd Fellows fraternal organization can help The Salvation Army in disaster response. This includes not only the membership, but also buildings and financial support. This 150 year old globe-encircling group recognized the Army at its international convention with the “Hands Around the World” award.
TEXAS TORNADOES
The Army has not overlooked the recent terrible tornadoes in central Texas. Disaster teams, mobile command unit, and four mobile canteens from elsewhere in Texas remain on the scene, serving search and rescue teams and victims, and providing spiritual counseling.
PAINT PARTY
To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Redwood City Corps chapel, the corps’ Home League and Men’s Fellowship got together and treated the walls to a “facial” of new paint. With oversight by Jim Grahmn, a professional painter and Senior soldier of the corps, the men scraped, primed and painted the exterior and the ladies dusted, cleaned and put in order the interior of the chapel. The day ended with a prayer of thanks and a delicious meal prepared by the ladies.
ALL ABOUT KIDS
The joyful voices of inner-city children from the Moore Street Community Center’s children’s choir matched the giving spirit of more than 600 guests attending the Army’s third annual “All About Kids” fund-raising event. Commanding officers are Lts. Doug and Colleen Riley. Entertainment included performances by pianist Capt. Randy Kinnamon and The Salvation Army Brass Ensemble. Ten Portland area youth programs received $92,950 at the Portland Hilton Luncheon event. They include West Women’s and Children’s Shelter, Moore Street Community Center, Greenhouse, White Shield Center, Family Services and Camp Kuratli.
WHAT ABOUT THE MUSEUM?
A one-page historical newsletter handed out at the recent Congress tells all about our program for preserving and sharing Salvation Army history here in the West. If you did not make it by the New Frontier/Museum booths in the Exhibit Hall and want a copy, let Frances Dingman know at 30840 Hawthorne Blvd., Rancho Palos Verdes CA 90275 and she will see that you receive a copy.
Also, if you need some of the brochure, “It Began With the Booths” (biographical sketches and Booth family tree) let her know. This is an excellent teaching tool for S.A. history classes.
OOPS!
In the last issue of New Frontier we identified Frontiersman of the Year Major Leonard L. Blix, Cascade Division correctional services, as Major Leonard H. Blix (R), who is actually Major Len Blix’s father. We apologize for the confusion this may have caused.
