He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God Micah 6:8 (NIV).
Little Caesars assists Ogden
The Ogden, Utah, corps, teamed with Little Caesar’s Pizza Love Kitchen to serve 720 hungry, homeless people. Little Caesar’s Love Kitchen—a full semi-trailer equipped kitchen—arrived early in the morning and started preparing pepperoni and cheese pizzas for the community’s homeless population. Majors Wes and Ruth Sundin, corps officers, state, “Our thanks to Little Caesar’s Pizza for helping the Ogden Corps show Christ’s love to his people in this simple yet fulfilling way.”
Whittier gains new leaders
Under the leadership and vision of Associate Corps Officer Major Judy Tanovan, the Whittier Corps’ Women’s Ministry has commissioned new leadership. Amadita Sanchez is Women’s Ministry secretary; Esperanza Wheeler is Home League treasurer, and Major Ida Gomez (R) is sunshine sergeant. Lt. Colonel Rose-Marie Leslie, So. Calif. Divisional Director of Women’s Ministry, conducted the ceremony.
Acts of kindness
Two of the Guam Corps’ community care ministries workers went to one of the most depressed areas of the islands, where they were able to help distribute food, water and croc-type shoes to the people. They also visited the Guam Memorial Hospital and took shoes for the patients, staff and visitors. Extras were left at the guest relations department, because often times patients can’t check out of the hospital because they don’t have shoes or clothing.
Creative caring in Antioch
The Antioch, Calif., corps’ new women’s ministries outreach—a crochet and knit club—meets weekly and is donating projects (hats, scarves, and lap blankets) to the corps’ community care ministries to benefit the elderly. The group is open to the public and advertises at local libraries, Laundromats and senior citizen communities. New women’s ministries’ member Valerie Walton leads the group in their projects; Captain Jacqueline Vaughnes-Smith is corps officer.
New shoes for needy
Stater Brothers Charities, the charitable foundation of a San Bernardino, Calif., based grocery store, donated 30 Foot Locker gift cards worth $50 each to both the San Bernardino and Cathedral City corps. “Two members of our basketball team needed shoes to compete in a tournament in Portland, Ore.,” said Capt. Nancy Ball, San Bernardino corps officer, “and purchased the shoes with these gift cards.” Roosevelt Carroll, Hospitality House emergency family shelter director, received the other 28 cards. Many people come to the Hospitality House wearing nothing more on their feet than a pair of flip-flops.
