There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under heaven…a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away. Ecclesiastes 3:1,6 (NIV)

Kroc hosts girl guards
Sixty girl guards and leaders representing seven corps gathered at the San Diego Kroc Center for a day of fun and friendship, reports Lynette Baker, San Diego Kroc girl guard leader. After breakfast and a time of music and a message by Kroc Administrator Captain John Van Cleef, the girls enjoyed workshops (jewelry making, silk screening T-shirts, fabric art projects, and “make your own spa treatment”), pizza, ice-skating and more.

WOW—Women of Wonder!
Women’s ministries continues to impact the West! At the Mesa Latino Corps, Ariz., the women’s ministries, led by Envoy Damaris Calderon and Roxanna McElroy, put on a buffet style breakfast attended by 90; the women enjoyed fellowship, games and prizes as well as a time of worship with singing and a powerful message. They also enrolled 16 new members for the corps’ first official Home League.

At the Alamogordo, New Mex., corps, women’s ministries members completed two more quilts, which they presented to Habitat for Humanity homeowners at the dedication ceremonies for their new homes. Lt. Stephanie Lueras is women’s ministries leader.

Billings, Colo., launched a “quick, healthy meals for busy families” cooking class for women, which included nutritional training with handouts and recipes, and a cooking class on how to prepare a well-balanced meal. Women made the meal in class and then received a bag with the ingredients, to make at home. At the end of the eight-week session, participants were given a crock-pot, roast and vegetables from Wal-Mart. They partnered with Montana State University-Billings’ Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program to provide these classes.

ARC Partnership award
Salvationists Karen and Victor Lim received an award on behalf of the Asian American Yerba Buena Corps, San Francisco, for partnership in service with The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC). The award was presented at the ARC’s annual sobriety dinner in appreciation for the corps’ outreach ministry to clients and their families during the year.

This month in history
March holds a number of firsts for The Salvation Army: La Maréchale (William and Catherine Booth’s oldest daughter) conducted the Army’s first meeting in Paris in 1881, thus beginning the work in France; in 1980 the International Staff Songsters were inaugurated; Army work began in former East Germany in 1990; and in 2007 the first of General Shaw Clifton’s pastoral letters to soldiers were dispatched electronically (to subscribe, go to the General’s web page at www1.salvationarmy.org/thegeneral and click on the link to pastoral letters).
